WHAT IS COMPOUNDING?
Prior to the introduction of commercial drug manufacturing, it was a normal occurance for pharmacists to compound medications to suit individual patient needs. Compounding allows the pharmacist to overcome many limitations of commercialy produced pharmaceuticals.
BENEFITS OF COMPOUNDING:
  • Ability to produce medication that have been discontinued by pharmaceutical companies
  • Combining several ingredients into a single dose to improve patient compliance
  • Patients who are unable to swallow medications and require altering ingredients to liquid forms
  • Flavoring medication so that it is better tolerated, especially in children
  • Changing the dosage form of a medication to suit a partricular need (lozenge, troche, pessary etc)
  • Providing a patient with a dose that is not possible to achieve with a commercial product
  • Allergies and intolerances where ingredients are excluded from a medication (e.g lactose)
